Impressions of Siem Reap (Nov. 1st-5th, 2012)

Impressions of Siem Reap

On the bus for almost eight hours might be a torturing trip and drove passengers like me bored as interesting activities on the bus like reading, playing games or chatting with nearby passengers seemed to run out of interest, but instead the strong impulse to reach Siem Reap overwhelmingly overruled. The trip from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap took us approximately 8 hours. I set off at 12 o’clock noon and managed to set foot in Siem Reap around 8 at night. The trip jet lagged me and pained my back; however, the deep passion to immerse myself in the excitement with well-known fresh, abundant air and the wonder of the temples seemed to magically offer the healing and refreshed the mood. After throwing myself on bed merely 20 minutes and washing face, I joined with other enthusiastic people to experience the night life in Siem Reap. The city is very lively and bustling with joyful activities, smiling and cheering faces of local vendors and tourists who are walking and bicycling. The clean streets, bright light from electricity and beautiful decorations by vendor stalls as attraction to passengers, ostensibly add stunning life to the city. Another good thing is most restaurants set reasonable food prices, and Wi-Fi is available and convenient to find. More exciting and fascinating to me is a whole bloc known on the main street as Pub Street has several western-styled pubs with the most recent disco songs. As a result, Pub Street has seen regular throngs of onlookers and party-goers.

The street is lively and bustling. What else could you seek to feed the fantasy in entertainment as the pub street renders virtually all services from pubs and various traditional should-try dishes to aquarium fish massage where you can be laid back with friends or relatives chatting and sipping drinks spontaneously if you like?

The first night was just the beginning of fun, of course. Although my body felt quite sore, the strong fascination to view the grandeur of the temples was so effective to recharge my physical energy. Therefore on the next day, I along with three friends headed to Banteay Srei temple by Tuk Tuk. Reaching there, we were impressed by craft products like krama and other souveniers at the entrance of the temple. We bought a krama and some wooden crafts. Interestingly, the owner of the stall happened to own a restaurant and we were surprised and delighted by the courtesy and good services after trying lunch there. The owner is so polite, friendly and sensible. After lunch we continued to see the temple. Banteay Srei, alias Citadel of Women or Citadel of Beauty, is a magnificient temple awestruck by the spectacular bas-relief carvings. We wandered around the temple to enjoy intricacy of the carvings and the tiny dimensions of the architecture.

Intricacy of the carvings and the tiny dimensions of the architecture

It's around three pm already after Banteay Srei temple visit. Feeling a bit tired, yet we agreed to explore during this best time for viewing the splendid sunset at Bakheng mountain. We hopped on Tuk Tuk and traveled to Bakheng temple. It took us about 30 minutes to arrive at the decided destination. It's almost five and we, like other curious visitors, rushed quickly along the windy trail to the atop steep hill. It's a trekking on foot although the path to the peak has been paved and clearly constructed. In previous times, visitors riding elephants to climb to the mountain was an interesting sight to see. This time I hardly saw one and apparently there was no sight of any elephant from the foot of the mountain. The stair up to the peak has been replaced by decent wooden rail making it convenient to walk up although there was throngs of visitors in queue. It took less time compared to the authentic stairs of the temple. As anticipated, the place on the summit was well occupied by curious watchers in pending to catch first hand the glimpse of sunset illuminating with its intensive orange light. Interestingly, there was a mass of people on the way flocking to the top behind. Our attempt and patience paid off as the sun gradually set and we took our time to eyewitness the attractive, beautiful sunset.

People in throngs are thrilled by the fabled sun

Perfectly safe to walk around at night
Feel thrilled with the peace and safety at night
An elegant hotel on the main street

After all, I had a wonderful time in Siem Reap. The time moved fast and thrilling. I also would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to BlogFestAsia 2012, the festival of bloggers gathering in a conference held in Siem Reap from November 1st to 5th, which I could grab the chance to visit Siem Reap and write about these impressions.

Always remember what my Japanese trainer says, which is both useful for personal development as well as leadership:
    1 spirit (attitude)
    2 know how ability
    3 physical strength

Together with these simple rules in life:
1 you don't ask you will never get
2 if you don't move, you'll stay where you are
3 if you don't chase after what you want, you'll never get it

Along with my three simple rules when one wants to get something:
    1 do it by yourself
    2 get it by money
3 wait to be given (the chance to success is low, though. What it's called live by the mercy of destiny, thus limiting one to think critically and to make smart choice)

    ***********************

Apparently we are attracted to different things; people feel differently on one same thing. It's useful you remind yourself and stick to your idea and preference. Treat what people think as a reflection. Treat them reasonably, but you don't need to lose yourself. I mean actually, you know yourself best and you know what you like although socialization, commercialization and materialism seem to completely swallow this quality of us. Believe each of us is unique, believe each of us has different and own hobby, believe each of us has own reasons in doing certain things, believe each of us has privacy. When we believe in all of these, we are free and surely this kind of people respect both themselves and the other people. :

    ***********************

Show "choices", help analyse the "pros&cons" and refrain from plunging someone because you want to move ahead of them. Whether they are attracted, they are convinced and think in the way you think is their choice. Learn to respect other people's choice!

[From a big fan of if you cannot do things better, do not do things worse.

These short tips below helps inspire some people and help them realise what they really like to do so that they are highly likely invest in self energy and concentration toward making improvement and achievement:

#1 what do they aspire/wish to be or become in the future?

#2 what do they need to do toward achieving their goal? Identify what needs to be done; arrange schedule accordingly or establish necessary network, subscribe to certain kinds of information channels and so on.

#3 Self remind: Success is a long journey and it's unavoidable encountering bumpy experiences. Then you need to stay strong and you need to be committed.

#4 Take good care of yourself. Expect the ups&downs; learn how to manage your moods; train your thought&mind with adaptable yet challenging attitude. Be open-minded to learning new things and working as a team and so on...

What do you think? Could you add?

    ***********************

You don't pay for people's stupidity and passiveness, don't you? It's certain of that. It's certain that you pay them according to their quality work, commitment and achievement. They therefore can decide to do the otherwise, to avert the course they are moving toward, and they have every right to refuse to endorse that kind of your temptation. Be critical, responsible and reasonable. Believe in your own sweat! "There's no free lunch in this world. Need to work to make a living."

In this fast changing and persistent challenging world, the attitude and mindset so driven by economic benefits and determination to enhance competitiveness emerges important than ever. In such environment, one gotta be firm, disciplined and skillful in time management; one shall have dream and goal and pursue them with their strong energy and deep commitment. One has to give their all and do their best (being healthy is good; physical and mental health are inter-linked) in order to be appreciated and stand tall among the other people.

If anything, however, troubles culturally, just keep reminding that if one cannot do anything better, just don’t do anything worse (several people can talk good, but they have the slightest idea how to walk the talk!) and complacency is so unacceptable when one cannot stand on own feet! One has to step out of their comfort zone, if need be (not sure if it’s a comfort zone or the uncomforting one).

Welcome your thoughts & Contributions ...

After exercise, feel fresh and feel like sharing about quality education in general :-)

As far as I notice and experience through all these years of teaching, I've witnessed some factors which could indicate a school can provide high quality of education:
1- Discipline: School sets up clear classroom regulation, discipline and punishment.
2- Learning environment in the class: high quality and strict discipline ensuring students are provided with friendly, conducive learning environment. High energy conducive to learning shall be retained and should not be compromised without proper reasons (Not easy!) But as far as I know, some schools are dealing whehter "to cut hat to fit the head or cut head to fit the hat."
3-Textbook and teachers with specialization and broad experiences on the subject they teach.
4-Strong motivation and leadership of school: Classroom regulation, disciplines, punishment&reward are there, but level of practice remains in high doubts and several schools are indecisive or not sure whether to strive for quality or number of students.

(Motivation and Leadership are strong; Energy is worth spending! Welcome your thought and contributions!
-Trust yourself more than the other people, yet show fainess to everyone whom deserves. You can no longer wait to trust yourself, to muster confidence; otherwise, some people will say because you trust the others too much and fail to play your cards right and smart as their justification!

    - Pay people who work for you, who do the tasks and roles of their responsibility well-they need appreciation & respect; nothing is free in this world!

-Don't end up buying products with best advertisement, yet with poor quality! (Welcome your thought&contribution

If you are type of having and building confidence in yourself, you'll find that you can't really trust anyone so easily, but you show fairness to everyone whom deserves.

You feel you need to trust yourself more than other people, because in case some of them cheat you, you still have yourself to rely on. And if you take care of all these: "attitude, know-how ability, and physical strenght", you know one day that you will become strong and realize your potential.

And life is complicated like making moves in chess game-don't stress out; admit to it!

Life wouldn't be fun without excitement & adventure. But! don't throw away responsibility. And! move on because everyone does just that.

You should hate what discourages your confidence and ability, yet you should not hate listening to what other people have to say; and compromise with reasons, but not with the ego and stubbornness. Reading-the pleasure&empowerment.

If you are an academic living in an area where books are scarce or limited, the connection and networking thru internet proves beneficial besides the advantages in expanding thought and connecting to the outside world. The internet in this situation can remove the barrier of impossibility and instead provide alternative of sources for books and various types of information. The internet can thus serve as a substitute library for reader fans

A good friend will not treat their advice to any problem as a command, but more as a reflection and as another option. They show you the paths; they support you and they eventually let you make your own choice. In this matter, remember that many problems arise from within self due to the lack of experiences, the lack of understanding due to little exposure to the issue, and due to the cut off from various sources of information. Not to mention the ego, own attitude and false promise by other people. It’s ok you can shout out loud realizing this complexity in life: it’s NOT easy to find a trustworthy person who really cares about you and who devotes the least in hoping not to exchange their own benefits.

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”- Steve Jobs
